Interviews

Khold - Sarke

14/09/04  ||  Global Domination

Old staff-member Rance interviewed Sarke from Khold for the old GD-site and had this to say at the time:

“Khold is a Norwegian band that plays badass rockin’ black metal. You would think that one of the Swedes from this site would interview a fellow Scandinavian band like Khold… but, I guess not. It’s up to me. When I emailed the band, drummer Sarke responded… so, perhaps this interview will give a little insight into the man keepin’ the groove on Khold’s three mammoth albums. Actually, Sarke and I have something in common. He doesn’t seem to be obsessed with Peter Forsberg (liKe some folKs I Know!)... that makes him ok in my book.”

Global Domination: First off, thanks for the interview…I know it’s tough to do this shit when you really don’t know who or what is asking the questions!

Sarke from Khold: That’s ok, I’m used to that.

I really like ‘Mørke Gravers Kammer’...Khold seems to get better with each release. Is this the album that you wanted to release now? Rather, how satisfied are you with this release?

I’m very satisfied. I think it turned out great. Thanks…I also think the albums get a bit better each time. I also like the 2 previous albums.

The production is excellent on this disc (in my humble opinion!), but some ‘black metal purists’ find that the type of production featured on ‘Mørke Gravers Kammer’ doesn’t quite tickle their fancy (is that the correct expression?!). Any comments on the production of your latest album?

We always try to get a clear sound, so everybody can hear what’s going on. At the same time we want a heavy and powerful sound. We have to do what we want, it’s our product. Usually we get great response on our sound, but it will always be someone that wants it a bit different and that’s ok.

Now, I don’t want to alienate any potential fans for you…but, fuck ‘black metal purists’! Like I said in my review of ‘Mørke Gravers Kammer,’ I prefer to actually hear and comprehend the music I listen to! Do you even consider your music ‘black metal?’

Yes, I feel we are a black metal band. We just have our own style and sound within the black metal scene today.

I’m not sure if you’ve answered this question to death…but, why the decision to release this cd through Candlelight and not Moonfog?

We all agreed that it would be the best for all parts. For us it is a step up. The sales has been twice as much here in Norway just in a few months, even [though] Moonfog is Norwegian and Candlelight is English.

A number of the writers at GD are Swedish, which means they like Peter Forsberg… thus they worship the Colorado Avalanche. I, on the other hand, do not (go Red Wings!). Does this strange ‘Peter Forsberg-worship-affliction’ affect all Scandinavians or just the Swedes?

I guess just the Swedes…you can tell him the best player in Sweden is Norwegian… guess he doesn’t like that very much!

I’ve played in death metal bands, black metal bands, even dark folk bands…but, it is just as likely to find the latest from Depeche Mode in my cd player as it is to find ‘Mørke Gravers Kammer’. What types of music does Khold enjoy?

Slayer is king! Can’t wait for the new Slayer album to come out. Lucky me, Slayer hasn’t been in Norway for 10 years. Now they will come and of course Khold will play at the other side of Norway the exact same date…. perfect!!!!!! So I must travel to Denmark to see them… Thanks Kerry King, you owe me gas money!

That’s great…I’ll let him know the next time I see him! Speaking of live performances, what is the inspiration for the band’s stage appearance (face paint, clothing, etc.)? Gard’s ‘turtle-neck’ look is sweet!

What can I say…we just do the thing we do. Gard is one ugly mother fucker. Hopefully we will come to the US next year, so you all can see. Dark heavy cold music with a clear powerful sound.

Any thoughts on the legacy of Khold to this point? (I know that’s a general question…basically it’s a fancy way of saying ‘Any last comments?’)

Do you think anyone will read all the way down here?? If so, hi to you! Its worth a try to check out our new album. It’s much darker than this interview…
